Classification
Quaternary ammonium compound essential to mitochondrial fatty acid transport; a nutrient, not a peptide
Structure and chemistry
L-Carnitine is 3-hydroxy-4-(trimethylazaniumyl)butanoate, a small water-soluble molecule synthesised endogenously from lysine and methionine, with iron, vitamin C and several B vitamins required as cofactors. Only the L-stereoisomer is biologically active; D-carnitine is not and can interfere with L-carnitine metabolism.
What the published research shows
Carnitine has a long clinical literature. Levocarnitine is an approved therapy for primary and secondary carnitine deficiency, and is used in haemodialysis patients and certain inborn errors of metabolism. Research into performance and body-composition effects in people without deficiency has produced mixed and generally unimpressive results — a distinction worth keeping clear when reading the literature.
Mechanism of action
Carnitine shuttles long-chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane via the carnitine palmitoyltransferase system, making them available for beta-oxidation. It also buffers the mitochondrial acyl-CoA pool, which matters in metabolic states where that pool becomes saturated.
Development history
Not a designed compound. Isolated from muscle extracts by Russian researchers Gulewitsch and Krimberg in 1905; its role in fatty acid oxidation was established decades later. Levocarnitine holds FDA approval for carnitine deficiency under the brand name Carnitor.
Current regulatory status
Oral and prescription injectable levocarnitine are approved for specific deficiency indications. The research solution supplied here is not an approved drug product and is for laboratory research use only.
Analytical testing
Concentration, sterility and stereochemical purity of the solution. Confirming the L-isomer rather than a racemic mixture is the meaningful check here.
