Classification

Laboratory reconstitution diluent — sterile, preservative-free water; not a peptide or research compound

Structure and chemistry

Sterile water is purified water (H2O) that has been sterilized and sealed to prevent microbial contamination. It contains no preservative, buffer or other added solute, so it contributes nothing to the chemistry of whatever is dissolved in it.

What the published research shows

Not a research subject in its own right. Its relevance is practical peptide chemistry: guidance from peptide suppliers and academic core facilities generally recommends sterile water as the first solvent to try when reconstituting a lyophilized peptide, moving to dilute acetic acid, dilute ammonium hydroxide or an organic co-solvent such as DMSO only when a sequence’s charge or hydrophobicity requires it.

Mechanism of action

Water acts only as a solvent. Peptides that carry a net charge at neutral pH generally dissolve readily; strongly hydrophobic or aggregation-prone sequences may need an acidified diluent or an organic co-solvent instead.

Development history

A standard laboratory reagent rather than a developed product. Purity grades for laboratory water are defined by standards such as ASTM D1193 and ISO 3696.

Current regulatory status

A laboratory reagent for reconstituting and diluting research materials, supplied for research use only. It contains no preservative, so it should be handled aseptically once opened.

Analytical testing

Relevant specifications are sterility, endotoxin level, conductivity or resistivity, and total organic carbon. HPLC peptide analysis is not applicable to a diluent; a certificate of analysis should state the grade and the endotoxin limit.

Research use only. MontanaPep supplies Sterile Water exclusively as a laboratory reagent for in-vitro research. It is not for human or veterinary use. This page is a reference summary of published laboratory guidance and standards.
