Classification
Thymic peptide extract (not a single defined peptide); registered in Russia
Structure and chemistry
Thymalin is a polypeptide extract prepared by fractionating calf or bovine thymus tissue. This is an important distinction: it is a mixture of thymic peptides rather than one defined molecule, which sets it apart from a synthesized peptide of known sequence. Its short synthetic analogue, Thymogen, is the dipeptide Glu-Trp.
What the published research shows
Thymalin has the longest clinical history of any compound in the Khavinson bioregulator group and has been used in Russian clinical practice since the 1980s. Its published human work includes a long-running cohort study of elderly patients. As with the rest of the group, no independent Western randomized controlled trial has been published. It has an indirect advantage over the other bioregulators: thymic peptide therapy has parallel research support outside the Khavinson program through the separate thymosin alpha-1 literature.
Mechanism of action
Reported to modulate immune function, particularly the age-related decline in thymic activity, with published effects on lymphocyte reactivity, natural killer cell activity, circulating immune complexes and phagocytic function.
Development history
Developed at the Saint Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology by Vladimir Khavinson and Vyacheslav Morozov, as one of the two original registered preparations from that program.
Current regulatory status
Thymalin is registered as a pharmaceutical in Russia and has been used clinically there for decades. It is not approved by the FDA or any Western regulator. Note that this is a tissue-derived biological extract, which raises manufacturing and characterization questions that a synthetic peptide does not.
Analytical testing
Because Thymalin is an extract rather than a defined molecule, sequence-based identity testing does not apply in the usual way. Meaningful quality assessment would address source material, protein content and profile, sterility and endotoxin — and a COA presenting a single “peptide purity” percentage for a tissue extract should be treated with caution, since that figure has no clear meaning for a mixture.
