Classification
Laboratory reconstitution diluent — approximately 0.6% acetic acid in sterile water
Structure and chemistry
A sterile aqueous solution of roughly 0.6 percent acetic acid. It is a solvent, not an active compound, and contributes nothing pharmacological to whatever is dissolved in it.
What the published research shows
Not a research subject in its own right. Its relevance is practical peptide chemistry: certain sequences are poorly soluble at neutral pH and dissolve considerably better under mildly acidic conditions. Peptide handling guidance from suppliers and academic core facilities routinely recommends dilute acetic acid for hydrophobic and basic peptides that do not dissolve in sterile water.
Mechanism of action
Lowering solution pH increases the net positive charge on peptides carrying basic residues, which improves solubility and reduces aggregation. For sequences with strong hydrophobic character this can be the difference between a clear solution and visible particulate.
Development history
A standard laboratory reagent rather than a developed product.
Current regulatory status
A laboratory diluent for research use only. It is not a pharmaceutical preparation and carries no preservative.
Analytical testing
Sterility, endotoxin and confirmation of acetic acid concentration. HPLC peptide analysis is not applicable to a diluent.
