Classification
Endogenous tripeptide, not a synthetic research peptide
Structure and chemistry
Glutathione (GSH) is the tripeptide L-gamma-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine. Unlike standard peptide bonds, the glutamate-cysteine linkage runs through the gamma-carboxyl group of glutamate rather than the usual alpha-carboxyl group, which is thought to help protect the molecule from ordinary peptidase degradation.
What the published research shows
Glutathione has one of the largest and oldest published literatures of any compound referenced in this catalog, spanning basic redox biochemistry, toxicology, hepatology, dermatology, oncology, neurodegeneration, aging biology, and numerous clinical contexts.
Mechanism of action
The principal intracellular low-molecular-weight thiol antioxidant. Its reduced (GSH) form neutralizes reactive oxygen species and electrophilic compounds directly and through glutathione-dependent enzymes, and is reversibly oxidized to a disulfide form (GSSG) in the process; it also participates in redox signaling, xenobiotic detoxification, and mitochondrial function.
Development history
Glutathione was not invented or synthesized by a research team; it is a naturally occurring molecule discovered through independent biochemical work in France and the United Kingdom in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Current regulatory status
Glutathione is not an experimental peptide but a normal, endogenous cellular constituent present in essentially all human tissue, most concentrated in the liver. Commercial glutathione products vary in form (reduced GSH, oxidized GSSG, liposomal, or other formulations), which matters for interpreting both research and analytical results.
Analytical testing
Identity and purity should be evaluated with methods appropriate to the claimed material, such as HPLC and mass spectrometry. HPLC area percentage alone does not establish molecular identity or net peptide content, and reduced (GSH) versus oxidized (GSSG) forms should be distinguished analytically.
