Classification
Short peptide bioregulator of the Khavinson series, designated for vascular tissue
Structure and chemistry
Vesugen is the tripeptide Lys-Glu-Asp (KED). It belongs to a family of very short synthetic peptides developed at the St Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology, each assigned to a particular tissue. Vesugen is the vascular member of that series, as Pinealon is the brain member and Thymalin the thymic one.
What the published research shows
The Khavinson literature is predominantly Russian-language and concentrated within the group that originated the compounds. Published work includes cell-culture studies of vascular endothelial cells and reported gene-expression effects. Independent replication in Western peer-reviewed journals is sparse, and no large controlled human trials exist. This is the central caveat for the entire bioregulator family.
Mechanism of action
The proposed mechanism is direct interaction of the short peptide with DNA or chromatin, influencing gene expression in a tissue-selective way. This account originates largely from the developing group and is not independently established.
Development history
Produced within a Russian bioregulator product family. Unlike Thymalin, it does not hold Russian pharmaceutical registration.
Current regulatory status
Not approved by the FDA or any Western regulator. Supplied for laboratory research use only.
Analytical testing
A three-residue peptide is simple to confirm: mass spectrometry against expected molecular weight plus HPLC purity.
