Classification

Porcine brain-derived peptide and amino acid mixture (not a single peptide)

Structure and chemistry

Cerebrolysin is not one molecule. It is a proprietary preparation made by standardized enzymatic breakdown of lipid-free porcine brain proteins, yielding a heterogeneous mixture in which roughly 25 percent by weight is low-molecular-weight peptides (below about 10,000 daltons) and roughly 75 percent is free L-amino acids. One millilitre of the solution contains 215.2 mg of the peptide concentrate. It is manufactured exclusively by EVER Neuro Pharma in Austria and administered by injection or intravenous infusion.

What the published research shows

Cerebrolysin has more human clinical trial data than nearly any other compound in this catalog — and the results are genuinely mixed rather than uniformly positive, which is the honest headline. Its largest stroke trial was neutral on its primary endpoint, its most rigorous systematic review found no benefit on mortality alongside a signal of increased non-fatal serious adverse events, and the overwhelming majority of positive trials were funded by the manufacturer.

Mechanism of action

Described as multimodal and intended to mimic endogenous neurotrophic factor activity. Proposed mechanisms from preclinical models include anti-apoptotic effects, reduction of oxidative stress, promotion of neurogenesis and enhancement of synaptic plasticity, with active components believed to cross the blood-brain barrier and act on pathways including BDNF/CREB signalling. Because the preparation is a mixture, its pharmacokinetics are inherently complex and not characterized in the way a single-molecule drug’s would be.

Development history

Originally developed in the 1940s and substantially refined in the 1970s by the Austrian pharmaceutical company EBEWE, later EVER Neuro Pharma. It carried the research designation FPF-1070.

Current regulatory status

Cerebrolysin is registered for clinical use in more than 50 countries — including Austria, Germany, Russia, China and South Korea — for stroke, traumatic brain injury and dementia. It is not FDA-approved in the United States and no US-approved formulation exists. Registration abroad is not equivalent to FDA approval.

Analytical testing

As with any tissue-derived extract, a single “peptide purity” percentage is not a meaningful specification, because the product is deliberately a mixture. Legitimate quality assessment addresses source material and traceability, peptide-to-amino-acid ratio, molecular weight distribution, sterility and endotoxin, and freedom from residual proteins, lipids and antigens. Note also that no generic or research-grade equivalent has been shown comparable to the proprietary preparation used in the published trials, so trial results cannot be assumed to transfer to other material.

Research use only. MontanaPep supplies Cerebrolysin exclusively for in-vitro laboratory research. It is not sold as a drug, food, cosmetic or supplement and is not for human or veterinary use. This page is a reference summary of published literature and regulatory records. Material is produced by pharmaceutical API manufacturers; how that process works is described in our research library.
