Classification
Blend of two Russian-developed regulatory peptides supplied as a single lyophilised preparation
Structure and chemistry
Semax is a synthetic analogue of the ACTH(4-10) fragment, sequence Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro. Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide derived from the endogenous tetrapeptide tuftsin, extended with a Pro-Gly-Pro tail to slow enzymatic degradation. The blend presents both peptides in a single vial in equal milligram amounts.
What the published research shows
Both compounds were developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Moscow and carry substantial Russian-language clinical and preclinical literature, with far less independent replication in Western journals. Semax has been studied in ischaemic stroke, optic nerve conditions and cognitive tasks; Selank has been studied as an anxiolytic without the sedation profile of benzodiazepines. Peer-reviewed Western trials remain limited, and the combination itself has not been studied as a fixed blend.
Mechanism of action
Semax is reported to modulate brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression and monoaminergic signalling. Selank is reported to influence GABAergic and serotonergic transmission and to alter expression of interleukin-6. Neither mechanism is fully characterised in humans.
Development history
Both peptides are registered as pharmaceuticals in Russia. Neither holds FDA approval in the United States.
Current regulatory status
Not approved by the FDA for any human indication. Supplied for laboratory research use only.
Analytical testing
Blended preparations should be confirmed by HPLC for the presence and ratio of both peptides, since a single purity figure for a blend does not establish how much of each component is present.
